持続的で将来性のある社会とは、どの様な社会でしょうか？それは、持続可能性が担保された上で現世代の持つ可能性よりも将来世代の持つ可能性の方が大きくなる、つまり、違いや多様性を認め可能性が発展して行く社会だと考えています。持続可能性と将来可能性が時間と共に発展して行く人間社会は、素敵ではないでしょうか。FDは、持続可能性と将来可能性が拡大する様なアイデアと社会の仕組みの探究、デザイン、且つ、実践を通じた新たな社会の想像と創造です。
本研究所は、より多くの人々が自己充足しながら持続可能性と将来可能性を拡大出来る様な社会を作り上げる、をビジョンとして掲げています。このビジョン達成への経路と手法の探索・確立を本研究所のミッションとし、我々はフューチャー・デザインと云うアプローチを提案しています。フューチャー・デザインは、現在に生きる人々が将来を強く意識する、又は、将来世代の立場や視点を獲得する事で将来世代の為にも共感性を発揮出来るのか、その結果として如何に思考や行動が変容するのか、探究する学問です。これまでの研究において「フューチャー・デザインのアプローチを取る事によって、人々は将来世代への共感力を発揮する様になり、結果として自らの自己充足・持続可能性・将来可能性をも高める」と示唆しています。本研究所は、経済学を中心に据えながら政治学・心理学・脳神経社会科学・生物学等を包含する多様な視点からフューチャー・デザインの学術研究・教育・実践・アウトリーチに取り組んでいます。
将来世代への現世代の説明責任制度や将来世代の視点獲得に基づく現世代の意思決定制度等、多様なFDの仕組みも考案されています。これらFDの導入で、持続可能性や将来可能性を人々が意識し、その拡大に向け行動変容する、という結果は学術的にも認知されています。FDは、人々が本来持っている共感力を将来世代の為にも発揮出来るのか、探究する学問とも考えられ、実際に共感力を発揮出来る、と示唆しています。本研究所には、経済学を柱に生物学、環境学、心理学、政治学、神経科学等、多様な研究者達が在籍し、こうした異能研究集団が、実験、理論構築、地域実践を通じてフューチャー・デザインに取り組んでいます。

What kind of society can be considered sustainable and future-oriented?
It is one in which the possibilities of future generations surpass those of the current generation, built upon a foundation of guaranteed sustainability. In other words, it is a society that acknowledges differences and diversity and allows human potential to flourish. A society where sustainability and future potential evolve over time—isn’t that a wonderful vision? FD (Future Design) is the exploration, design, and practical implementation of ideas and social systems that expand sustainability and future possibilities, aiming to imagine and create a new society.
Our research institute holds the vision of creating a society where more people can expand their sustainability and future potential while achieving self-fulfillment. The exploration and establishment of pathways and methodologies to achieve this vision is our mission. To this end, we propose an approach called Future Design. Future Design is an academic discipline that explores whether people living in the present can become more empathetic toward future generations by consciously thinking about the future or adopting the perspectives and positions of future generations, and how such awareness transforms thought and behavior.
Previous research suggests that taking a Future Design approach enables people to express empathy toward future generations, and as a result, enhances their own self-fulfillment, sustainability, and future potential. Our institute engages in academic research, education, practical application, and outreach in Future Design from diverse perspectives—including economics as the core, along with political science, psychology, neuro-social sciences, and biology.
Various FD mechanisms have also been proposed, such as systems for present generations to be held accountable to future generations, or decision-making systems grounded in the perspectives of future generations. The introduction of such FD mechanisms has been academically recognized as fostering an awareness of sustainability and future possibilities among people, prompting behavioral transformation aimed at expanding them.
FD is also considered an academic discipline that investigates whether humans can extend their inherent capacity for empathy to benefit future generations—and it suggests that they indeed can.
Our institute is home to a diverse group of researchers with expertise spanning economics, biology, environmental science, psychology, political science, and neuroscience. This unique interdisciplinary research group tackles Future Design through experimentation, theoretical development, and community-based practices.
